Five years into running my consultancy, I found myself asking an unexpected question: Am I still doing the work I'm meant to be doing? What followed wasn't a change in direction, but a deeper understanding of the value I bring. This is a reflection on growth, human-centred transformation, and why the way we create change matters just as much as the change itself.
When NWADASS invited me to work with them to capture learning about workforce integration across health and social care I immediately knew that I wanted to get into the people aspects of change. Where I’ve seen real change happen, at pace, is where people have been empowered, enabled and equipped to come together, get to know and understand each other better, share challenges and ideas and start to try something new. My interest was immediately sparked when I heard that several other councils had begun their journey towards blended roles at the same time as Tameside and yet Tameside had, when I began this work, been the only North West council to successfully implement. I believe creating learning cultures is one of the most important skills for leaders to have. I’m on a mission to help people understand what learning cultures look like, why it matters and how to create one. As part of my Lessons in Learning series I’m doing an experiment to see what I discover by capturing my learning every day for a month and how that helps leaders to think about creating cultures where people learn every day as part of doing what they do. The culture we work in can manifest itself in many ways - our behaviours, how we interact with one another, the mindsets that frame our thinking, as well as the physical things that are around us in our work environment. I’m celebrating my first anniversary in business!!!! It’s a year since I found the courage to leave my well-paid job in the public sector and work for myself. I can honestly say I’ve not looked back for a second. I love it!! I’m a big reflector so it only feels right to take a step back one year on and think about what I’ve learned. Four key chapters in my learning journey that changed my life course, the way I do things and the way I think about learning.
